Death of homeless man in Onondaga Creek appears accidental, Syracuse police say

Syracuse, N.Y. — A 39-year-old homeless man found dead in Onondaga Creek Sunday morning accidentally drowned, Syracuse police said today.
Around 7:35 a.m. Sunday, an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputy was working for the Rescue Mission when they found the man in the creek, said Capt. Matthew Malinowski, a police spokesperson.
Malinowski said the man was homeless and staying under the bridge between Gifford and West Onondaga streets.
Police are working to find the man’s next of kin before releasing his name, Malinowski said.
