The letter has wonderful content on the changes in American industry and manufacturing during his lifetime. He writes about advances in textile manufacturing, steam engines, steamboats, telegraphs, oil lamps, matches, and more. He also writes about the increased size of America from its founding. Some of the names found in the letter, “Rev. J.H. Sterns” [Josiah Howe Stearns (1812-1887)], “Morris Lamprey” [(1827-1879), Lawyer], and “Daniel M. Christie” [Daniel Miltimore Christie (1780-1879), Lawyer]. History: Col. William Stearns (b. 5 August 1803 in Deerfield, New Hampshire – d. 1 January 1881 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire) was a machinist and politician from New Hampshire. He was the son of John Stearns (1762-1843) and Sara Lane (1765-1845), and the husband of Martha Winkley (1803-1879). His brothers were John Stearns Jr. (1793-1868), Samuel Stearns (1795-1861) Joshua Stearns (1801-1884). Condition: Folds/creases, soiling, few tiny closed tears. See pictures.
